ROBOTS.TXT - How to Block Pages, Directories?

ROBOTS.TXT  RULES:

Here are the ROBOTS.TXT commands which can be used by creating a notepad file and place these codes if you would like to block a page, file, directory or whole site.

List of ROBOTS.TXT COMMANDS

  • To block the entire site, use a forward slash.
    Disallow: /
  • To block a directory and everything in it, follow the directory name with a forward slash.
    Disallow: /junk-directory/
  • To block a page, list the page.
    Disallow: /private_file.html
  • To remove a specific image from Google Images, add the following:
    User-agent: Googlebot-Image
    Disallow: /images/dogs.jpg
  • To remove all images on your site from Google Images:
    User-agent: Googlebot-Image
    Disallow: /
  • To block files of a specific file type (for example, .gif), use the following:
    User-agent: Googlebot
    Disallow: /*.gif$
  • To prevent pages on your site from being crawled, while still displaying AdSense ads on those pages, disallow all bots other than Mediapartners-Google. This keeps the pages from appearing in search results, but allows the Mediapartners-Google robot to analyze the pages to determine the ads to show. The Mediapartners-Google robot doesn't share pages with the other Google user-agents. For example:
    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /

    User-agent: Mediapartners-Google
    Allow: /
Note that directives are case-sensitive. For instance, Disallow: /junk_file.asp would block http://www.example.com/junk_file.asp, but would allow http://www.example.com/Junk_file.asp. Googlebot will ignore white-space (in particular empty lines)and unknown directives in the robots.txt.

Pattern matching

Googlebot (but not all search engines) respects some pattern matching.
  • To match a sequence of characters, use an asterisk (*). For instance, to block access to all subdirectories that begin with private:
    User-agent: Googlebot
    Disallow: /private*/
  • To block access to all URLs that include a question mark (?) (more specifically, any URL that begins with your domain name, followed by any string, followed by a question mark, followed by any string):
    User-agent: Googlebot
    Disallow: /*?
  • To specify matching the end of a URL, use $. For instance, to block any URLs that end with .xls:
    User-agent: Googlebot
    Disallow: /*.xls$
You can use this pattern matching in combination with the Allow directive. For instance, if a ? indicates a session ID, you may want to exclude all URLs that contain them to ensure Googlebot doesn't crawl duplicate pages. But URLs that end with a ? may be the version of the page that you do want included. For this situation, you can set your robots.txt file as follows:
    User-agent: *
    Allow: /*?$
    Disallow: /*?
The Disallow: / *? directive will block any URL that includes a ? (more specifically, it will block any URL that begins with your domain name, followed by any string, followed by a question mark, followed by any string).
The Allow: /*?$ directive will allow any URL that ends in a ? (more specifically, it will allow any URL that begins with your domain name, followed by a string, followed by a ?, with no characters after the ?).
Save your robots.txt file by downloading the file or copying the contents to a text file and saving as robots.txt. Save the file to the highest-level directory of your site. The robots.txt file must reside in the root of the domain and must be named "robots.txt". A robots.txt file located in a subdirectory isn't valid, as bots only check for this file in the root of the domain. For instance, http://www.example.com/robots.txt is a valid location, but http://www.example.com/mysite/robots.txt is not.

Latest SEO Updates December 2013

Some of the Latest Updates about SEO & Latest In formations

1. Google is Tough on Repeat Offenders

One of the most fascinating and little-known areas of SEO news is Google penalties. When websites break Google’s webmaster guidelines with outdated tactics like buying links, they’re typically caught.
Google’s head spam fighter, Matt Cutts, recently revealed in a Q & A session that it’s much harder to come back and rank well after a second or third penalty. In fact, his recommendation for websites who are trying to improve their SEO after past use of purchase links to use the disavow tool to wipe their backlinks completely

2. Rich Snippets Could Be Rolled Out Soon

The author photos which appear next to search results once you’ve earned Google authorship are a form of rich snippet. However, it appears the world’s biggest search engine is considering leveling the playing field

3. In-Depth Results aren’t Going Anywhere

Back when Google’s Hummingbird Algorithm re-write was launched, the search engine announced they’d be sharing in-depth search results for around 10% of queries that may require more complex answers. Recent SEO news have indicated that the in-depth articles initiative continues, and that every web master has an opportunity to have their content featured among these top results:

While many of the websites featured in in-depth results have extraordinarily high site authority, the Google webmaster blog announced the SEO news that you can improve your chances of being featured here with the following tactics:

4. Google to Index App Content

If you haven’t yet built an app for your business, there may be even more incentive to get started now. Some of Google’s latest SEO news is that content from Android apps would soon be indexed like regular web pages.

5. Google PageRank is Now Up-to-Date

In perhaps the most shocking piece of SEO news in months, Google PageRank was quietly updated on December 6, 2013. Prior to 2012, the tool bar was updated on a quarterly basis, allowing SEOs and content marketers almost real-time access to their site’s authority in the eyes of Google.

6. Semantic Search is on the Rise

Anyone who’s been using web technologies for more than a decade remembers Boolean search operators. Early search engines weren’t smart enough to pick up on things like plural words, and you had to join your queries together with specific terms like “and”, “or”, and “else.” However, the deployment of Google Hummingbird, Bing’s Satori and Facebook’s knowledge graph in 2014 is clear evidence that search engines are getting much smarter at picking up on the variation behind phrasing choices, a concept known as semantic search.

7. Google Penalizes Excessive Linking

Cutts recently addressed the long-standing belief that you should never exceed 100 links per page on your website. Turns out, it’s still a wise best practice. In the early days of search, major engines had trouble indexing content with more than 100 links. While the capability is now there, excessive linking can be a pretty serious red flag that someone’s being spammy. Cutts recommends that content marketers stick to a “reasonable number” of links.

Latest Google Hummingbird Google Algorithm Updates 2013!

New Algorithm Humming Bird in TECHNOLOGY!

It is fact that internet search has become quite a common approach, these days, whether it is about finding information, logging complaint, and purchasing any product or service. Google, one of the best search engines, always prefer to facilitate the searchers, which is why it introduces different algorithm on time to time basis. Algorithm basically works for the searchers to help them in finding the pages, which have the searched keywords.  To facilitate online users more, Google has introduced its new algorithm, named Hummingbird, on its 15thbirthday.

What Google hummingbird is all about?
According to many experts, Google hummingbird is a true replacement of Penguin and Panda, as it pays more attention towards each and every word of the query input by the user. The basic aim of this algorithm is to find out what the online user is actually looking for so that the search engine may offer him the web pages with exact matching words. Now you must be thinking why this algorithm is known as hummingbird. Isn’t it? If you are thinking the same then you must know that Google has named this algorithm hummingbird because of its fast speed and precise nature.

What Google Hummingbird is going to Affect Websites?

With the launch of new algorithm, everyone is concerned that how it will affect the websites.  If one would say that the emergence of hummingbird algorithm will change the entire system of Google ranking and content judgment then it will not be wrong.
The basic aim of this algorithm is to focus the quality of the content in order to facilitate the online users at its best. It is assumed that with the help of hummingbird algorithm, the use of Black Hat SEO Technique will be decreased, which will be quite beneficial for the real SEO experts and of course, for the online users. Do not forget that if you will found using such techniques by Google then it will penalized for your site. The most interesting part is that this hummingbird algorithm is already there and affecting search results. You will be amazed to know that humming bird algorithm was launched just a month ago but it has affected almost 90% of total worldwide searches already, which is quite surprising.

In nutshell, it is worthy to acknowledge milestone of Google in terms of more user satisfaction and to offer more recognition to experts, who are putting real efforts.

About myself: Pravish Thomas ( SEO Analyst / Blogger / Strategist / Design Planner / E-commerce Visualizer / Google SEO Optimizer and Business SEO Consultant ). I m here to assist u in all types of websites related to Optimization and Web Promotion.

Clients Notes:
Its very important that before u consult any SEO u need to know about ur site itself. For ex: if its a Auto parts site u need to know which categories ur are going to target and what's ur business preferences.

1) Do u need to target various keywords to make it on top 10 ? ( keywords + traffic)

or

2) Do u need to do Mass promotion+ Internet Marketing ( High end traffic- only traffic )

3) Total Search Marketing ( High End traffic + Brand awareness + Keyword traffic) (includes - SEM, SEO, Internet Marketing, Viral marketing, Social, video, photo marketing, PPC, Banner advertising, Local Advertising, Local Marketing SEO/SEM )

So here as a SEO Consultant what I believe is that if there is no perfect communication between a client and a SEO then all the efforts of SEO's would be waste. A SEO needs to have a proper understanding about the subject then only can he can win Google's heart as u need to do a huge research specially when its E-commerce sites, many clients put 1 or 2 SEO's and start thinking that we can make it on top and that's it - Hurray!!!!! We are MILLIONAIRES!!
Is it? NOO The issue is that how a SEO handles the project and also depends upon the team of SEO's. Its not only SEO - U need a lot of Internal & External Marketing if u are in business like Real estate, Auto, Health, HOTEL
Freemarket.com MarketplaceFreemarket.com Marketplace
Time FrameYes, this is a very crucial factor, as many SEO's don't make it to the time frame with the desired keyword based on client's choice. So its very important that the keywords that a client chooses have a time frame, due to competition and search. So as a SEO Consultant & SEO Freelancer I would give the client various keyword and suggestions which would not only bring client's sites on top but would have a large popularity(traffic) among targeted users. Bringing traffic is one thing and getting revisit of the same visitors is another.
  • So u need to basically have a SEO Consultant who would understands ur site and what actually ur site is trying to target users?
  • Which type of customers is the client's targeting?
  • How far is the client going to spend in Search Marketing?
  • Demographics - AGE
  • How can costs be saved?
So all this type of question needs a thorough research on the site itself and then only strategies can be applied.

What is the most important part to be noted in optimizing a website by SEO Freelancer expert?
Well, U always know that if the base is perfect everything would be all fine and for a long long time. I m talking about the On page optimization which is the most important part of SEO where SEO's do the actual work, some do only few work and rely more on Link building ( off page optimization) which is one type of Mass submission process. Link building is important but if ur base is incorrect or not matched to the competition then ur submissions would be of no use. What u would be getting is Bulk traffic where ur analysis report would show number of visitors but no sale or irrelevant inquires. So this is where I consider the most important part or role of an SEO is to know about what the Site is actually, Targeted users, location base of users etc. As Google always loves pages that are focoused on USERS than search engines.

Recovery Tips Google Penguin Updates

Recovery Tips for Google Penguin Updates

I have collected some tips here.

1. Avoid hidden text or hidden links.

2. Don’t use cloaking or sneaky redirects.
3. Don’t send automated queries to Google.
4. Don’t load pages with irrelevant keywords.
5. Don’t create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.
6. Don’t create pages with malicious behavior, such as phishing or installing viruses, trojans, or other badware.
7. Avoid “doorway” pages created just for search engines, or other “cookie cutter” approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.

8. If your site participates in an affiliate program, make sure that your site adds value. Provide unique and relevant content that gives users a reason to visit your site first.

One of the Point which is not clear to me:
Don’t use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our Terms of Service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.
Answer:
Normally many SEO's use rank checker or different types of software to check rankings, so will checking ranking via software will affect rankings ?

MY suggestions:
To build links natural way, to build via quality content rather than sticking to the actual keywords. Its hard but that's the only option as of now. What i also feel is that google considers fresh pages, fresh content, fresh links, old quality based links which has content related to your subject.

Latest Google Algorithm: Penguin Algo Update

PENGUIN UPDATE! Latest GOOGLE ALGORITHM Update as on APRIL 2012 24 Update

There has been widespread reports about the latest algorithm called "webspam update" which is now said to be called as the PENGUIN UPDATE.

I have found that many say this algo is a total failure as webspam update was released to fight webspam and spam sites to reduce rankings for such sites. But in the process many legitimate sites rankings have gone down or have vanised from the top 100 lists.

Other updates that had taken place in April:
April 19 - PANDA UPDATE 3.5
Domain Classifier update - MISTAKEN Update by google which google then clarified
Webspam update: Penguin Update : APRIL 24, 2012

Google's spam update has done much damage to legitimate sites than spam sites. I have also discovered that ecommerce sites are less hit by the udpate than the service sector sites.

Google Algo Penguin Updates Questions ?

  1. Is off page more important  than on page ?
  2. Is backlinks from social bookmarking sites like folkd.com will be devalued?  As many social sites have lost traffic during this update.
  3. Is Blog commenting termed as spam ?  Does blog commenting from legitimate sites is also spam?
  4. Is Forum signature links completely dead
  5. If a website doesn't do SEO then also will a site rank ?  ( Becz as per matt cutts he says that even if one doesn't do SEO then also its better)

As per updates have found
Google is behind wordpress themes links in the footer sections

More updates to be followed.   Send me your reactions to latest update - What you think about the current updates and issues faced?
